This Saturday, a blast of exciting slam dunk action is coming to Denver.

The Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown at NBA Nation makes its way to downtown Denver as part of the 23rd Annual Cinco de Mayo “Celebrate Culture” Festival on May 8. This amateur dunk contest will test the skills of Denver’s highest-fliers and most dynamic dunkers as Sprite and LeBron James continue their search for the best dunkers from eight different cities across the United States.

The competition is open to any of those that think they can soar as high as LeBron himself. Fans can still submit their own dunk video, or vote for their favorite dunks as NBA.com/dunk. Fans will have a say in selecting the top dunker from the Denver area via their votes from the website. The top dunkers in Denver will earn cash prizes and will have the chance to compete at NBA All-Star weekend in 2011 in front of King James himself.

Brandon Whalen, the online community promoter for the Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown, said the contest is all about finding the best non-pro, non-collegiate dunkers across the country and taking them to compete against similar contestants across the country.

This will be just the second stop on the NBA Nation tour this summer and on May 1 Kenny Dobbs earned top dunk honors in Phoeniz, Ariz. for his performance. Who will be next? Who out there in Denver thinks they have what it takes to be recognized as the top amateur dunker in Colorado? Is it you?

Find out on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. MDT at the Civic Center in downtown Denver. The event will be on Broadway in between 13th and 14th Avenues, be sure to get to the court a little early to secure a premium seat to see some of the best dunking skills Colorado has to offer.

Colorado Sports Desk will be there to cover the event live and we will bring you an update on the winners tomorrow.

Until then, enjoy this highlight video from Dobbs and his top dunks from Phoenix.
